Historic Sewickley Tote Bag

New this year from SVHS -- a shopping tote featuring one of two designs!

Each highlights a historic photograph of a Beaver Street business from the Collections at SVHS. Perfect for gift wrapping or getting a head of the plastic bag ban!

Design A:  Features Schlumpf’s Bakery-- illuminated by a kerosene lamp, is baker Schlumpf and his family. The store was on the corner of Beaver and Locust Streets.

Design B: Features Hegner’s-- With a presence on Beaver Street since the 1860s, first as a shoe shop, then as a harness maker and hardware store, Hegner’s was a Sewickley Valley staple. The store featured in this tote design dates to the late 1800s and still stands on the corner of Beaver Street and Hegner Way. Alterations to the building occurred over its long history, including the addition of a third story to what was then called Hegner’s Emporium (as noted in the story shared by John Poister), but the third story burned in the 1970s leaving the building that the Jewel Thief and the Sewickley Barbershop call home today.

Tote Dimensions: 100% Cotton. W:15" Depth 4.7" H: 18.5"

Price: $25 each (PA residents add 7% sales tax), plus $5.00 postage/handling.

The Surveyor and the Silversmith (Item #: B-023)

"Neither the Leni Lenape nor the Iroquois called the land their own; for thousands of years, it had been inhabited by a mysterious people for whom they had no name. And, yet, white men like Daniel Leet, William Crawford and George Washington surveyed dense forests with measuring chains, tomahawks at-the-ready, to claim hundreds of thousands of acres simply because they could, because it was all God’s bounty, because, like silver or gold, it would provide wealth far greater than any civilization had known before. It was an ideal few would realize. But then, one day, two families laid roots in the wilds of western Pennsylvania…

Just launched, The Surveyor and the Silversmith is an indepth look at  what land speculation meant to our young country, to those who could afford the opportunity, and to those whose very lives and culture were threatened by it. The Surveyor and the Silversmith derives its stories from actual letters, ledger books, and oral histories of Western Pennsylvania."

Everything But Gray:

The Life of Audley Dean Nicols

(Item #: B-022)

"In 1912, Audley Dean Nicols was a successful magazine illustrator, a popular citizen of a Pittsburgh suburb. Then, he heard “a call in the desert.” Following that call changed the course of his life and the art of the Desert Southwest.

The brilliant light of the desert and its austere beauty were “a revelation to Pittsburgh eyes,” Nicols wrote. In meticulous, vivid canvases he became devoted to conveying that revelation. His paintings pioneered a distinctive style of photographic realism in desert landscape painting and sparked a new interest in Southwestern art.

Though widely appreciated in his lifetime, Nicols’ paintings faded from public view after his death. This book presents the largest assemblage of Nicols’ work so far gathered in one place, along with a documented biography. In it, a remarkable artist is brought back into the light."

Valley Care Association of Sewickley, Pennsylvania

(Item #: B-021)

"Valley Care Association has been a leader in providing comprehensive, high-quality elder care in the Sewickley Valley since its founding in 1978. Formed through an unprecedented partnership of nonprofit organizations and concerned citizens, Valley Care made a commitment to address this vital need. With broad community support, it raised funds and hired experts to develop and operate Valley Care Nursing Home and two Adult Day Care Centers, establishing services that have met changing elder care needs for four decades. In 1999, the nursing home became part of the Masonic Village retirement community. Today, Valley Care continues to support the elderly as a pillar of the community. Authors Janice Jeletic and Alison Conte tell the story of excellence and compassion that mark Sewickley's Valley Care Association."
